Twenty-One

So I am really enjoying this pregnancy calendar. Because I'm lazy! And I don't need to look up more stuff!

This week, I had two doctor's appointments: one for the structural ultrasound, where I got to see Fetal Blah waving madly at me like an old friend seeing me through a crowd (and they measured the diameter of her little round belly - so frickin' cute I almost collapsed, except I was already lying down, so what the hell), and one today, my regular baby doctor appointment. Dr. B said, "You're measuring kind of big." Which, yeah, they said at the amnio ultrasound last month, so I'm not surprised. I do feel bigger this time around than when I was pregnant with Viva.

We determined that I have gained 15 pounds to date, which as far as I'm concerned, is really not bad considering I'm past the midway point. And considering that I'm "tiny" to begin with (5'1" on a good day, and un-pregnant, usually between 110-115 pounds). But my doctor frowned. "Have you been eating a lot?" she said.

"Well, yeah," I said. "Because I'm hungry." I started to feel a bit defensive. "Mainly healthy stuff, a lot of fruits and veggies...well, I have been eating more ice cream than usual."

Dr. B said, "Well, cut back a little on the ice cream."

"But it's SUMMER!" I said. "It's been really frickin' HOT!"

"It's okay to eat a little ice cream," she soothed. "Just as long as you're not eating a whole pint a night."

"But I'm not," I said. "I don't even eat it every day." Oh, Ben and Jerry's, how I love you. Anyway, I left there and drove back to work and picked up a toasted bagel with cream cheese on the way in. Big belly be damned. And hey, doesn't the baby need calcium?

When I was pregnant last time, I gained 32 pounds. That was well within the recommended weight gain (25-35 pounds). I think it is ridiculous for an otherwise healthy person to count calories while she is pregnant. I stoutly refuse.

In other news, Dr. B says if all goes as planned, she'll do a C-section a week ahead of my due date, which would make Fetal Blah's birthday October 29th. She recommends that I schedule my last day of work to be October 3rd, which means that I have just slightly more than 3 more months of work to go. Holy fast-forward, Batman -- this is going quickly!

I agree with your aversion to pregnant calorie-counting. As long as blood pressure is good, etc., I think pregnant women should be able to eat what they want and gain as much as their bodies want to gain. Enjoy.

E: You are so right! I know someone who is about my size who gained 80 pounds when she was pregnant. She looks fine now. I am so not sweatin' it!
