The Best You Could Hope For

Friday evening. We make the bold decision to tell Viva about the baby. “We’re all in this together, right?” Dub says. “I think we should tell her.”

Viva loses her mind, completely loses her mind, with glee. For a few seconds she is absolutely still as a smile steals over her face, and then she leaps off the couch and jumps back and forth across the room over and over. “I’ve been waiting for a brother or sister MY WHOLE LIFE!” she shrieks. “I can’t believe we’re going to have a baby!”

I think she took it well.

Yay! So cool. We told O. very soon after we knew, too. We thought about trying to wait, but we knew that would just be too bizarre trying to keep something so big and vital from him. (And when I started heaving into the kitchen sink every evening somewhere between 5 and 7 PM, I was very glad he knew. "Daddy! Mama's puking again!" But he knew it was normal, so he wasn't frightened.)

I'll bet Viva will be an excellent older sister. O. is just about five years older than our little Roo, and he's been so amazing with her. He loves her ardently, and she thinks he's definitely the coolest, most fun thing going.

Holy moley, did I actually let almost a week pass before I responded?? So sorry!!

Yes, it would be very hard to keep such a big secret from someone you live with and love so much. And, God forbid, if I miscarried, there is no way I could hide my sadness and pain from her. We are a family, for better or worse. (Not to imply that I would throw more at her than she could handle, but either way, this is a big deal.)

At any rate, I am excited for her, if such a thing makes sense. I can't wait to see how my two little ones interact! The relationship you describe between Roo and O. sounds so sweet!
